What is WPI?
All yarn categories on this page are defined using WPI (wraps per inch) measurements.
WPI is a simple, practical method used to estimate yarn thickness: the yarn is wrapped snugly (without stretching or compressing) around a ruler for one inch, and the number of wraps is counted. The higher the WPI, the thinner the yarn; the lower the WPI, the thicker the yarn.
Using WPI creates a consistent and comparable way to describe yarn weights across different brands and fiber types, especially when standard labels may vary.
